Our Botanical Garden
These two images were made with the Holga camera in "El Charco de Ingenio" Botanical Garden in September, 2002. Many people, both gringo and Mexican, loved to walk in the Garden. It was a favorite tourist destination. There is a charity that raises money to protect and improve the Garden.
This week 50 of the 67 hectares of the Garden burned. The fire was on the North side of the canyon which preserved most of the area that had been developed with paths and buildings. But scattered through the Garden are many unique or very old specimens of plants and Cacti. This is a beautiful ecological reserve and also can be considered a historical site for the ruins of aqueducts and water works from the past that can be seen there. Here in San Miguel the newspapers reported the fire as an enviromental disaster.

A great loss. Do they know how the fire started?
I've heard that some kids started a fire and it got out of hand which is no surprise in this dry, dry climate.
Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear about this fire. Guy and I hiked all over the place there and were in awe of the beautiful cacti. What a horrible loss. I'm sorry for all in San Miguel, and for the rest of us.
How very sad. Looks like it was very beautiful. It is a loss indeed.
Hi Billie,
I met Gary last night, who suggested I look at your blog. I do arthropod photgraphy as a hobby... http://thingsbiological.wordpress.com.
My family and I will attending a family reunion in San Miguel de Allende beginning Wednesday. I would appreciate suggestions in terms of naural areas for browsing and light hiking within walking distance. I was hoping to find something regarding the Botanical Garden on your blog. Was hoping to find something different than what I encountered...

Dave,
Here is the website of the Botanical Garden.

Mostly what burned is on the North side of the canyon....take a look at the small map. So there are still areas to walk and hike. Also, you might want to see about taking one of the horse rides out in the campo. Loved you "bug shots."
