The Drive

I don't know how many of my readers have made the drive from Laredo to San Miguel but it is one long day. We have done it a lot of times and yet I never seem to get tired of the scenery. Sometimes it is through the mountains but most of it is across long stretches of high desert. The land is full of cactus, sage, and scrubby trees and the variety of those plants change as you drive from one area to another. And the colors of the landscape change with the light. Sometimes sienna, other times lavendars and sometimes golds and umbers. Then there is the sky. The sky seems to stretch forever and ever.

There are small settlements that dot the landscape. The ones along the roadside are squat buildings. Sometimes there is washing hanging on bushes or a fence. Children playing in the dust. A rider on a horse. A boy herding goats.

I think about the people who live there but it is hard for me to imagine their lives.

This image was made at San Pedro, the place we usually stop for lunch and gasoline. It is about four hours from Nuevo Laredo and five hours from San Miguel. But it is many, many hours away from the life we live in Houston.

"But it is many, many hours away from the life we live in Houston."

Poetic, and, because it is poetic, true.

I like that "the colors of the landscape change with light." The sky is beautiful and seems to just go on and on. How great that you can capture such beauty. Thx for sharing. My friend yaya lives in Laredo, Texas. Take care.

Yes, very difficult to imagine one's shoes on someone else's bleesings. Living in the United States has a lot of hours away from little rural villages. Of course, living in any place with some money makes the hours shorter. Don't you feel at time with too much? I do. Great analogy.

Saludos.

I, too, love the high deserts of Mexico. I just don't think I could live there. Zacatecas and Durango come to mind.
