The Arroyo

Rain again all night long. This morning there was a break in the......I was going to say a break in the clouds but it wasn't. It was only a break in the rain. It is still cloudy and looks like we will be getting more rain today. Nevertheless, I needed to get out so I thought I'd check out the Arroyo that runs through San Miguel. Most of the time it is just a ditch with a few stagnant green puddles. Not today. This is about three streets over from us and down hill. Way down hill so we don't worry about flooding unless it is of epic proportions....like Noah's flood. At this point I'd say the water is about 12 to 15 feet deep and in places looks like rapids.

I would not put my little toe in this water. Not only is it all the run off from the streets but many people complain that it is an open sewer. I don't know if it is or if it isn't but that gray slimy mess coming from the pipe on the left, makes me think it could be true.

The icky color of the arroyo waters is caused by deforestation of the surrounding countryside. Eroded clay held in suspension is so fine the waters of the presa never become clear. And yes, the arroyo is used as a sewer. At the east end, the water smells sweet; at the west, like a cesspool.

I hear citizen groups are working on correcting this, but I have no hard information as to what steps are being taken. The planned shutdown of the old slaughterhouse will eliminate one vile source of pollutants.

So sorry you'll are having to live through this type of inconvenience. While you are on a hill, you might also be wary of mud slides, should the rain continue. Please be careful, and certainly, if it warrants it, be prepared to leave at a moment's notice.

John, it is hard to imagine all the hills around SMA being covered with forests. But a year or so ago the Down to Earth Garden club went to a government nursery near Celaya and they were told that the scrubby little trees we now see around did cover the hillsides.

Yaya, I'm not really worried about mud slides where we are. But thanks for worrying about us.

Fun to look but scary to touch!
