The Mexicans usually eat a big meal around two to four o'clock in the afternoon. Then a light meal in the evening....usually just a taco, or fruit or cereal. We slip from the American way to the Mexican way from day to day. But I'm beginning to think I like the Mexican way but with just a little variation.
For example, yesterday we went to the Palapa for comida....that big afternoon meal. A couple of fish tacos, some coleslaw and a beer. After a walk back home in the sun, it was time for a little reading and a short siesta. Then when I went back to the studio, I put in some productive time at work. I didn't have to stop at 6:00 PM to make a dinner but by 9:00 PM we were getting the munchies.
I wish I had taken a picture of our "munchies" but since I didn't I'll just have to tell you about it. I had bought some of the tiny bananas at the Tuesday market and we had vanilla ice cream in the freezer. So I peeled and sliced the bananas, cooked them a few minutes in a bit of butter, added some brown sugar. After the sugar dissolved, I added rum and cooked it off. Served it over the ice cream with a drizzle of chocolate syrup.
I know, I know.....a few more calories than a bowl of cereal. But I love the Mexican way of eating.......with an American twist.

Mmmmm. The ice cream with bananas sounds great!
I love ice cream with bananas and a picture would have been nice, but already it is developing in my mind and soon I will run out to grab some bananas and ice cream and maybe even rum. Take care, gloria from modesto, ca.
Every so often, we have our "big" meal in the middle of the day also. Although we like doing that for exactly the reason you state, we do find (like you!) that our munchies later end up being just a bit, shall we say, indulgent? LOL!
("Oh, I'm not very hungry. I'll just have big bowl of buttered popcorn!")
That sounds so good!!Now I'VE got the munchies!!
We do the comida thing, usually our cena is left overs. But since we rarely have dessert, we don't feel bad about having our dessert for cena! I love those little bananas too.
We also have been known to have popcorn for cena. I have the best popcorn recipe! You pop corn in an air popper (enough to make several quarts). You toast 3 tablespoons of sesame seeds. You melt 3 tablespoons of butter to which you add an equal amount of honey and a teaspoon of grated orange peel (zest). You coat the popcorn with the honey mixture and then sprinkle the sesame seeds on. The seeds stick to the honey mix. It's incredibly good, tastes like dessert but not as many calories, this should be more than enough for 2 people.

Theresa
Just this past week, I have become addicted to mangoes flambéed in Grand Marnier --topping vanilla ice cream. I am always a sucker for a good flambée. Got this one at a restaurant in Melaque.
