Nearly everytime we are out in villages and go inside a church there will be a dog or two. Quite often we find them, like this old white dog, right in the middle of the aisle during a mass or wedding or funeral. Most of the time no one pays any attention to them and I don't think they are paying any attention to the congregation either. Just one more thing I like about Mexico.Friday, November 14, 2008

Oh good! I've been worried about access issues for my husband's guide dog (Ron is legally blind). We leave for San Miguel de Allende in 2 weeks. This is reassuring! Hope Rusty will be welcome to attend church, go out to dinner, and enjoy music venues.
He lies quietly, just like this, when he is waiting patiently for Ron.

Tina, most restaurants do not allow dogs. I do not know what the regulations are though if the dog is an official guide dog. But I hope you have a wonderful time here in SMA.
In most places, service animals are usually the exception to the no-dogs rule. I hope that's true in San Miguel.

It seems to be a Mexican dog thing, this lying out in the middle of everything. I don't know if it has to do with wanting attention, want people to be sure and see them so they don't get stepped on, or is it some show of bravado? I worry about them when they do it in the road. Everyone seems to respect their right to do so. The Captain's Club, where we play music, has never turned out dogs. I wouldn't take one into any other indoor restaurant, though (one with outside seating is fine), or a grocery store.
I don't know that's it's just a Mexican dog thing, in my backroad travels throughout the US, I see a lot of dogs laying out in the open, often in the middle of the road or street I'm trying to drive on. I think it more a dog thing.

Interestingly enough (at least to us!) there is actually a law in Mexico about giving access to service dogs. We're planning on taking a copy with us, as well as having it translated into English.
Hope it will help, or there are a lot of places we won't be going. It's all part of our test run in Mexico to see how it will be.

Great picture Billie. Love it. The dog is just enjoying a cool siesta in the church listening and watching. Love it. I did take a picture of a dog at the Alóndiga de Granaditas in Guanajuato. He was taking the sun in a cool morning. Very cute.
